Why There Is No New 9-1-1 This Week (November 28) & When Season 8, Episode 9 Releases

9-1-1 is not airing a new episode tonight, November 28, 2024. The procedural has been airing since 2018 when it originally premiered on Fox. ABC acquired the show in 2024, and the new partnership is already a resounding success. Season 7 was a reduced length following the 2023 Writers and Actors strike, but season 8 is expected to return to 9-1-1’s typical full 18 episodes. With only eight episodes down, there’s still a lot for fans to look forward to.

9-1-1 season 8 has been chock-full of exciting character development, high-stakes emergencies, and the classic, modern flair that sets 9-1-1 apart from its modern procedural contemporaries. Every character has a storyline set up for the second half of season 8, from Maddie Buckley-Han’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) second pregnancy to Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) potentially leaving 9-1-1. With so many new plot points up in the air, it makes sense for viewers to eagerly await the next episode. Unfortunately, 9-1-1 fans may be waiting longer than they expected.

The Usual ABC Schedule Is Changing

Like many other network favorites, 9-1-1 is on hiatus until 2025. The November 21 episode marked 9-1-1 season 8’s fall finale. It’s customary for programs airing on cable to have a mid-season finale in the fall or winter in order to film the second half of the season. Every title wants to have enough episodes to make it to May (when most season finales air), and a small lull during the holidays is the easiest way to do it. Though it’s disappointing to not have a new episode tonight, it’s a necessary sacrifice for the rest of the season.

Instead of a new episode of 9-1-1 or a rerun, tonight ABC is airingMary Poppins at 8 ET following last night’s special episode of 20/20: “The Untold Story of Mary Poppins.” The 2-day coverage is to celebrate the film’s 60th anniversary. But 9-1-1 fans need not fear as the show is only on a temporary break. While the show is on hiatus, viewers can expect reruns to air on various cable channels. During the downtime, fans may want to catch up on 9-1-1: Lone Star ahead of its series finale.

When Will 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9 Release?

Fans Will Have To Wait Until The New Year

Though viewers are already impatient for the continuation of 9-1-1 season 8, there will be a slight wait before the firefighters return. 9-1-1 will return with new episodes on Thursday, March 6, 2025. Episode 9 will air at 9-1-1’s usual timeslot (8 ET) and is expected to have its typical runtime as well. The new episode can be streamed, like always, on Hulu the day after. During the hiatus, viewers can catch up on the first 114 episodes of 9-1-1 on Hulu, Disney+ (premium), fuboTV, and more.

Both Doctor Odyssey and 9-1-1 are streaming now on Hulu.

Waiting until March will certainly be a disappointing time for 9-1-1 fans. Some shows like High Potential will return as early as January, whereas the ABC emergency responder drama will be postponed another few months. Doctor Odyssey viewers will have to wait until March 6 as well, so the return could be a double feature for fans of medical mishaps as seen in the new ABC title and the long-running 9-1-1. In fact, the first 8 episodes of Doctor Odyssey may be able to tide viewers over until 9-1-1 returns.

What To Expect From 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9

Cliffhangers Will Be Resolved And New Conflicts Will Be Explored

Eddie and Buck sharing a beer on the couch in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 6

9-1-1 season 8’s mid-season finale left many stones unturned. While some characters seem to have an obvious story arc laid out for the future, others are less certain. Athena Grant’s (Angela Bassett) storyline in 9-1-1 season 8 seems to be heading in an unclear direction, while Evan “Buck” Buckley’s (Oliver Stark) recent breakup leaves the world as his oyster for the latter half of the season. Some 9-1-1 storylines are surely close on the horizon, like Eddie’s potential relocation to Texas, Maddie and Chimney Han (Kenneth Choi) facing their second pregnancy, and the new house for Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) and Athena.

There are many possible storylines for the second half of 9-1-1 season 8 that the first 8 episodes have teased. The show needs to deal with the fallout of Buck discovering Eddie’s moving plans (season 8, episode 8, “Wannabes”). Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen Wilson (Tracie Thoms) could revisit their feelings regarding their son’s near-death experience on Halloween night (season 8, episode 5, “Masks”). Even something as simple as what recurring cast member Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) has been up to could provide stellar content in the next ten episodes. Regardless of what arc is next, 9-1-1‘s future looks bright.
