Though Abby is a mature woman who should have a stable life, she’s stuck in a state of torment as she’s forced to take care of her ill mother. In Season 1, Episode 4, “Worst Day Ever,” Abby ends a stressful day at work by going home and looking after her mother. Though her mother has a support worker to care for her basic needs, Abby is left to deal with the aftermath of her memory loss. When Abby wakes up after a nap, she discovers that her mom has run away and experiences an immense rush of panic as she sets out to go and find her. Patricia’s unknown whereabouts offer another layer of tension and sadness to an already distressing 9-1-1 episode, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats and filled with dramatic tension. Plus, this example also indicates that even after dealing with a serious plane crash at work, Abby’s stress is never-ending, and her uphill battle starts again as soon as she walks through the front door.

In 9-1-1 Season 1, Episode 6, “Heartbreaker,” their relationship travels to the next level, but not in the way that viewers would expect. During their first date, Buck chokes on a piece of bread and quickly becomes unconscious. Abby calls 911, but the emergency services will not arrive on time, so she conducts a makeshift tracheotomy to save his life. Although this 9-1-1 episode is completely absurd and a bit graphic for a first date, the fact that nothing ever goes to plan for these two foreshadows the untimely end of their relationship. It also emphasizes that no matter how much these characters try to escape the traumas of their job, they will always be with them.

Though Abby Clark was a fan-favorite character on 9-1-1, viewers said their goodbyes to her in Season 1, Episode 10, “A Whole New You.” After the tragic death of her mother, Clark decided to pack her bags and set off to Ireland as a way to process her grief and fulfill her mother’s life-long wishes. But fans weren’t down for too long as she made a surprise return in Season 3. This time, she arrived back in Los Angeles with a newfound sense of self as well as a dashing fiancé. Yet, her relationship with him ultimately fizzled out again, and she decided to call it quits for good in Season 3, Episode 18, “What’s Next?”

Fans will be surprised to hear that Connie Britton actually left 9-1-1 after the first season because she only signed a one-year contract. Ryan Murphy explained Britton’s hesitancy to sign a lengthy contract in an interview with Deadline:

“Connie and I are talking about her coming back. Connie had just come off Nashville, and she didn’t want to do another show right away. I said, ‘Well, why don’t you just do a one year deal’, so Connie has a one-year deal, and we all knew that going in.”

As mentioned by 9-1-1 showrunner in a Hollywood Reporter interview, Britton agreed to come back after Tim Minear pitched the idea of Connie’s return in the final two episodes of Season 3, with the help of Angela Bassett at American Horror Story‘s 100th episode party. Her return was never meant to last and was purely conceived to give Buck some closure so he could move on.

That means older characters who were thought to be in the past got a chance to continue their story, either for dramatic stakes or to help established characters envision a better future. Abby served her purpose for Buck’s storyline, but she wouldn’t be turned away if she ever answered a 911 call again.
