Tyler Perry’s The Oval | Season 6 Episode 6 Review: Power Play

The Oval Season 6, Episode 6: Power Play – A Controversial but Perfect Episode

Alright, The Oval fans, let’s talk about this latest episode. I have to say, while the ending was undeniably controversial, I still think this was an outstanding episode. Many viewers were shocked that there was no warning or disclaimer at the beginning or end of the episode, especially since it’s Black History Month. Some feel the content was inappropriate for this time of year.

Taja V. Simpson, the actress who plays Priscilla, posted a clip on Tuesday afternoon with a caption cautioning viewers that the episode might be triggering. And honestly, she wasn’t wrong—this episode was intense.

Despite the controversy, I’m giving Power Play a 10 out of 10. I can’t even remember the last time I rated The Oval this high! It feels like we’re finally getting the payoff for all the buildup. Hunter finally took action after spending so many seasons lounging around, ignoring his duties, and indulging in drugs and women. This was the moment we’ve been waiting for. The episode set up something big, and even the other storylines weren’t as frustrating as usual.

Hunter Takes Back Control

Hunter sits in the Oval Office and makes it clear that he’s planning to get rid of both Victoria and Eli. These two are stunned, trying to downplay the situation. But Hunter isn’t buying it. Last season, when he was barely able to stand on crutches, he walked in on Victoria and Eli together, and they openly mocked him. Now, the tables have turned.

Victoria has always seen Hunter as a clueless, privileged white man who only made it to the presidency because of his skin color. And to be fair, his track record doesn’t argue against that. But now, he’s proving he’s not as powerless as she believed.

Victoria tries to leave, but Hunter pistol-whips her. Eli panics and tries to reason with Jason, telling him that he was the one who saved him and has proof. But Jason isn’t buying it. The episode leaves us hanging—literally—at the end when Hunter enacts his plan.

The Controversial Ending

Hunter calls Donald and tells him he’s back in control. He makes it clear that Victoria and Eli’s actions are punishable by execution. The final moments show their feet struggling as they are hanged, though it’s unclear whether they are dead or just left unconscious and in need of medical attention.

This ending was powerful but also extremely unsettling. Many fans feel it was an unnecessary and overly dramatic choice, especially considering the timing. Tyler Perry definitely pushed boundaries with this one.

Other Key Moments

  • Max and Bobby realize they’ve been bugged, and Max hints at it in coded conversation.
  • Donald sends Bobby to pick up his wife, which immediately sets off alarm bells—it’s clearly a setup.
  • Kyle tries to get with Lily, but she isn’t interested.
  • Priscilla and Max argue, with Max warning her to back off before she gets into deeper trouble.

Overall, despite the controversy, this episode was a game-changer. Hunter is no longer a passive president, and things are escalating quickly. What did you think about the ending? Was it too much, or was it the bold move the show needed?
