That Was Fast! 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Ronen Rubinstein Already Has a New Job After Retiring as T.K.

As they say, when one door closes, another one opens, and that couldn’t be truer for 9-1-1: Lone Star original cast member Ronen Rubinstein who just booked his first role after retiring as beloved firefighter-paramedic T.K. Strand.

What’s Ronen Rubinstein doing next after 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s cancellation?

Variety reported on December 7, 2024, that Rubinstein had been cast in the upcoming Western short movie, Roses, alongside Teen Wolf alum Andrew Matarazzo (who also co-wrote the film) and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story star Orlando Pineda. The movie — which begins filming on December 16, 2024 — follows “two outlaws (Matarazzo and Rubinstein), once close partners in crime, [who] find themselves at odds when a once-in-a-lifetime bounty comes into play,” according to the film’s official synopsis. The synopsis continues, “But what seems like a simple betrayal is complicated by their deep bond and shared history, leading to a heartbreaking choice between the loot… or their friendship.”

Rubinstein also confirmed the news with a joint Instagram post with Matarazzo and Pineda at the time. “truly grateful to everyone who believed in me & my big visions, which often seem out of reach…until they’re not 🥀 so excited about everyone on board this wild west ride!” Matarazzo captioned the post, to which Rubinstein commented a rose emoji.

Roses will mark Rubinstein’s first major acting role after his retirement as firefighter-paramedic Tyler Kennedy “T.K.” Strand on FOX’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, which he’s starred on for the past five seasons. 9-1-1: Lone Star — on which Rubinstein is an original cast member — is set to air its series finale on February 3, 2025. The show — a spinoff of 9-1-1, which originally aired on FOX until it moved to ABC in its seventh season — was canceled by FOX in September 2024.

“This young man would’ve been happy with just 1 season,” Rubinstein captioned an Instagram Story of his original fitting for 9-1-1: Lone Star after the cancellation news. “Thank you for changing his life forever. Playing T.K. these last five years has been the greatest honor of my career. I love y’all so f—in much.”

Before the cancellation news, Rubinstein shared his hope for the series to continue after rumors at the time that it was headed toward the graveyard. “Nowhere in that article stated a certain fate for our show,” Rubinstein wrote on his Instagram Story at the time. But one thing I do know for certain is we will continue pouring our blood, sweat and tears into these last few episodes and deliver to you our most special season yet. I better see all of you in September.”

Rafael Silva, who plays T.K.’s husband police officer Carlos Reyes, also had a positive outlook on 9-1-1: Lone Star’s future. “Wherever the ship sails, [I’m] grateful for the family I’ve created on this show,” Silva wrote on his Instagram Story.

Along with 9-1-1: Lone Star, Rubinstein’s credits also include one episode on FX’s American Horror Stories — also by the 9-1-1 franchise’s creator Ryan Murphy — as well as stints on shows like Orange Is the New Black and Dead of Summer.
