Love Island’s Kaz opens up about hair loss after stress from being in prison
Kaz Crossley opened up about her hair loss and changed outlook on life during an emotional chat on tonight’s Love Island.
The ITV star spoke to newcomer Ron Hall – who later chose to couple up with her – about her experiences over the past few years. “After everything that’s happened to me on my journey, it’s made me who I am and made me do the things I do now, you know? Even like shaving my hair off, it’s because I had alopecia. I shaved it off for charity,” she revealed.
“No way! What charity?” Ron asked, with Kaz referring to the Little Princess Trust as she shared: “It’s a charity that makes wigs for children going through alopecia and cancer.”
After Ron said her actions were “amazing,” Kaz coyly said: “Yeah, now I embrace the short hair.” Ron didn’t hold back in his response, exclaiming: “It’s sexy as f**k, it’s fit as f**k.”
Kaz’s choice to “embrace” her new look comes after she previously admitted to FUBAR Radio: “I feel like a boy. I’d be lying if I said that I felt super confident or I love it. It’s weird for me to not have my hair but you know if it means that I take a bit of my confidence away to give these girls their confidence, then I’ll do that.”
In 2023, Kaz hinted that stress is the main trigger for her alopecia, though it can also be influenced by injuries, illness and environmental factors. “I became consumed with sadness every time I looked in the mirror and made it worse in my head,” she said in an Instagram post at the time.
“…Even if my mental health is in a better place now, no one talks about how hard it is to navigate feeling ‘better’, the PTSD and feeling of anxiety thinking that something bad will happen.
“It’s a s*** feeling not feeling like the person you were before. It’s also s*** being aware you don’t ever want to feel like that again and everything you do is consumed by trying to stay happy and positive.”
Kaz’s hair loss came after she was detained at Abu Dhabi airport while in transit to Thailand, and ended up spending several nights in a jail cell due to a leaked video from 2020 which showed her snorting a white substance in Dubai.
Kaz addressed the incident in a video posted to Instagram, and said the video had been taken in secret by an ex-boyfriend, who had leaked it “maliciously” online with the intent of “ruining my career”.
Speaking to the Mirror, Kaz opened up further, and revealed: “I really believe like everything happens for a reason and when I went through that, obviously I made a mistake you know your mistakes don’t define you. I’ve just grown so much from that experience.
“Everything that I went through… the stress and how long it went on for, it did make me a stronger person. And I’m really proud and happy of the person that I am now and who I have around me and going into the villa feels like it’s the perfect timing to be able to show people who I really am.”
