Love Island All Stars contestant Marcel Somerville has got everyone talking after heading back into the villa mid-divorce at 39 years old.

Among the comments on the show, one person wrote: “Imagine being on Love Island and ur options are a mid-divorce 39-year-old, a 25-year-old misogynist & guy that would rather make everyone a coffee in the morning…” (sic)

Another wrote: “39, father, in a divorce, cheater, what the f*** are you doing on love island #loveisland.”

Someone else wrote: “Producers must be so desperate to be bringing in a 40-year-old man who isn’t even fully divorced???”

It has been nearly eight years since the Blazin’ Squad star first found romance with Gabby Allen in the Love Island villa in 2017 before he cheated on her in the outside world in 2018 while they were on holiday together.

In that gulf of time in the outside world, Somerville had a son Roman, three, with Rebecca Viera, the couple got married and then they split up when she sent racy messages behind his back. Their divorce is ongoing but Somerville is single.

Having failed to find long-lasting love in the outside world, Somerville is back in the villa alongside his ex Allen.

At 39, Somerville is the oldest Love Island All Stars contestant this year compared to the youngest who is 24-year-old Catherine Agbaje.

However, Love Island executive producer Mike Spencer defended the decision to recruit the musician for the All Stars edition.

Asked about Somerville’s marital status, he told The Sun: “He had a wife! Marcel is single. He’s ready to mingle. Give the guy a break. He’s had a tough time.”

He added: “Well, I don’t know much about his life. But I think he’s a really good guy. He’s so sweet and he’s looking for love. So we are the home of love. We create proper relationships. So why not come and give it a go?”

Admittedly the dad-of-one revealed his estranged wife Rebecca was shocked to find out he was going back on Love Island, the All Stars edition.

He told The Mirror: “For Rebecca, Love Island was a shock. She was she wasn’t expecting it to happen, but she’s become accepting of the situation because she made a mistake. I can’t put my life on hold when opportunities like this come up.”

Somerville and Rebecca split last year when the musician discovered his wife of two years had sent flirtatious messages to rapper Slim Jxmmi.

“I did feel like maybe this is karma,” Somerville also told the newspaper because he had cheated on Allen. Somerville has apologised for sleeping with a stranger on a holiday while his then-girlfriend Allen was at the gym.

He added: “But this was a different relationship. When you’re married you are fully invested. When things happened with Gabby, I made a point of saying to myself, ‘Yes you are in the whirlwind of everything that was going on – because life was crazy at the time — and you messed up, you made a mistake.”

Somerville and Allen have been partnered up on Love Island All Stars by the public after their history together. So what happened?

Summer 2017: Sparks flew between Somerville and Allen in the Love Island villa. They fall for each other and make it all the way to the final where they come in fourth place.

September 2017: The couple are planning to buy a house together in the real world. Allen told Yahoo UK: “We’re looking for a house at the moment to buy together and we hope to be living in it by Christmas. We’re great and Marcel is literally amazing. He’s up in Liverpool tonight doing an appearance … and I can’t wait for the Blazin’ Squad reunion so yeah look out for that.”

February 2018: Allen said marriage was on the cards for the couple during an interview on This Morning. She said: “We’ve discussed whether we’d get married abroad. We’ve only been together for eight months, so you’d think it would be quick. But it’s so magnified that it’s already spoken about.”

May 2018: Allen and Somerville split up after it emerged Somerville cheated on Gabby during their Mexican getaway.

January 2025: The exes are reunited in the Love Island All Stars villa.
