Matthew Gray Gubler and Kat Dennings were the quirky dream team back in the late 2000s. He was the awkward genius of Criminal Minds, and she was the snarky queen of 2 Broke Girls. Together? Pure magic. But even magic has its limits. Their relationship didn’t last—thanks to Gubler’s insane filming schedule. The actor revealed during his interview with Glamour in 2015,

I’m still really good friends with her. I love Kat. She’s the best.

Their connection was deeper than your average Hollywood fling. In an exclusive interview with Shock Ya!, Gubler admitted that Dennings was definitely one of those rare gems.

I love Kat, as she’s actually one of my closest friends, and we actually dated many years ago. It’s very rare to find weirdos who are like yourself, (laughs) so when you find them, you keep them close. Kat’s one of them, as is Ricky, John Waters, Ray Wise and the whole cast. I couldn’t be more proud of the unique people I was surrounded by in the film; we all speak the same language.

In 2014, the duo reunited on screen for Suburban Gothic. While the romance faded, their friendship thrived. Gubler knew the value of keeping his people close, and Dennings was one of his favorites. Sure, their love story had to take a backseat to FBI cases and waitress jokes, but their mutual respect never went anywhere. Turns out, some weirdos are just too rare to lose.

Matthew Gray Gubler Is Back! Leading CBS’s Einstein Pilot Like a Genius Boss

Guess who’s making a comeback? Criminal Minds legend Matthew Gray Gubler! He’s trading Spencer Reid’s FBI badge for a whole new vibe in CBS’s Einstein (working title). Picture this: he’s Einstein’s great-grandson, a brilliant but messy Princeton professor whose bad-boy ways land him solving murders with the cops.

Gubler stars as Lew Einstein, a Princeton professor whose intellect is as undeniable as his bad-boy streak. When his antics land him in hot water, he’s roped into helping a detective crack complex cases. Sound familiar? Lew’s a scientific prodigy, much like Gubler’s iconic Dr. Spencer Reid, but with a wild streak.

For Criminal Minds fans missing Reid, this feels like a perfect evolution. Gubler’s back where he belongs—solving mysteries, dropping brilliance, and making it look ridiculously cool. Genius, meets crime-solving swag.
