Is ‘Criminal Minds’ Giving Us a New Iconic Bromance?

Tyler Green (RJ Hatanaka) in 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' Season 18.

As many macabre thrills as we get from each case in Criminal Minds, the reason we stick around for so long is the heartwarming relationships that blossom within the BAU. From unlikely friendships to cute couples, the cop procedural consistently gives us bonds to invest in, and one of the major bromances throughout the show’s run was between Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore). The lanky genius and on-field badass may not have had much in common on the surface, but they grew to respect each other’s abilities and learned from one another. Morgan, especially, became a big brother figure to Reid, teaching him the physical aspects of the job while always encouraging his confidence, leading to endearing moments being scattered among the lively banter.

However, when Moore exited the show in Season 11, it marked the end of this bromance, fully disappearing as Gubler also left at the end of Season 15. We haven’t quite got anything like it when the series was rebooted in 2022 as Criminal Minds: Evolutionsbut it seems like Season 3 is finally setting up a new one. Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) was first introduced in Criminal Minds Season 12, essentially replacing Morgan’s role as the capable field agent and eventually managing to strike up a friendship with Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), who was initially distant due to the loss of Morgan. Evolutions Season 1 later introduced Tyler Green (Ryan-James Hatanaka), a tech-savvy criminal who ends up joining the BAU in Season 3, kicking off a potential bromance that had contentious beginnings.

‘Criminal Minds’ Sets Up an Enemies-to-Bromance ArcTyler Green (RJ Hatanaka) in 'Criminal Minds: Evolution' Season 18.

You know what’s better than an enemies-to-lovers arc? An enemies-to-bromance one. Like Criminal Minds’ original bromance of Morgan and Reid, Alvez and Green could not be more different, except this time, they genuinely dislike each other since they are also on opposite sides of the law. Although Green eventually agrees to help the BAU take down the Sicarius network, it is on the contingency that he works with Garcia, a fact that rankles Alvez, who has taken over Morgan’s role as Garcia’s protector. What amplified the animosity was the strange love triangle that existed between them. Sparks fly between Green and Garcia during the case, which unnerves Alvez, who had apparently gone on a date with Garcia off-screen between Criminal Minds Season 15 and Evolutions Season 1.

However, Evolutions Season 3 premiere sees Alvez firmly welcoming Green as an FBI rookie, with most of their reservations about each other being cleared up. In the latest episode, they even work together, using each other’s talents to convince a witness to come forward and identify Elias Voit (Zach Gilford). It is the first time we see them working together harmoniously and successfully, a far-cry from the initial scenes where Alvez would roughly interrogate Green, suspicion oozing from every pore from both sides of the table. Already, the enemies-to-bromance angle gives the duo some pull, especially as they’re not averse to teasing each other and pulling on threads of the past. All the pieces are ready for this tentative friendship to become a full-blown bromance.

Luke and Tyler Could Make a Comedic Duo in ‘Criminal Minds’

In Evolutions, it is the sisterhood of Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), JJ (A.J. Cook) and Garcia that have been giving us the majority of the comedy, with the former two getting high together last season and the latter being frazzled by her awkward relationships with Alvez and Green. It’s time for the men to do some of the heavy-lifting too, and this duo couldn’t be more primed to do so. While the competition between them in last season’s love triangle was comical, this was mainly because it was in relation to Garcia’s endearingly dramatic reactions. But, it does set up Alvez and Green’s potential to become the resident comedy duo in the season, a spot that is waiting to be filled.

Their individual personalities also hold promise for hilarious interactions. Alvez has an often wry and cheeky humor, as he never shies away from making a tongue-in-cheek remark or needling out the more comical angle on a morbid situation. Meanwhile, Green has a more wide-eyed approach to his role this season, as he is eager to prove himself as a rookie, but this is layered with his criminal background, making him an easy target for jokes. Even though the comedic beats of their friendship haven’t fully evolved yet, there is some subtle teasing, mainly by Alvez, that makes us anticipate proper belly-aching in the future.

‘Criminal Minds’ Gives Us a Fresh Take on the Love Triangle

Usually, the result of a love triangle is one of the romantic couples breaking away and leaving the third person heartbroken. In this case, it would be Garcia choosing Green or Alvez. But Criminal Minds gives us a fresh update on the romantic trope as an unexpected bromance seems to blossom out of it. The pair we didn’t even consider would end up together! Although the show hasn’t necessarily slammed the door on a potential romance between Garcia and one of the men, the fact that a burgeoning friendship instead of increased competition is coming out of it is refreshing. Of course, this may complicate the triangle even more as the two grow closer, but who doesn’t love a side of romantic drama to their serial killer cases?

The love triangle was also a way for Alvez and Green to realize the one thing they had in common, and arguably the most important: they cared about Garcia. Under all the excitement over their antagonistic roots and potential for comedy are their individual relationships with Garcia, a similarity that lays the foundation for a strong bond, especially since she is the reason they got over their initial conflict in the first place. Criminal Minds has meticulously laid the groundwork over the last two seasons and, hopefully, this season will water their friendship enough to become the next iconic bromance.
