Ben Mezzenga From ‘Love Is Blind’ Season 8 Has an Avoidant Personality

Ben Mezzenga’s privileged and ignorant answers to Sara Carton’s questions about politics and the Black Lives Matter movement in the pods had already given viewers a preview of his personality. However, as Love Is Blind Season 8 progressed, it became evident that Ben had deeper issues that needed to be worked on if he wanted to be in a committed relationship with someone. When Sara questioned Ben about a TikTok video posted by a woman who allegedly dated him in the past, Ben feigned ignorance and provided the meek excuse that he didn’t remember.

While this is still about a possibly insignificant relationship, things get incredibly worse when Sara asks him how he is okay with the questionable views preached in his church. To this, Ben responded that he doesn’t remember services in the past being all that questionable. There’s a pattern here where Ben uses the excuse of not remembering to get out of having an honest conversation about complex topics. He seems to be living in a fairyland where everything is hunky dory, but alas, the realities of the world are anything but.

Ben Has Used the Amnesia Card One Too Many Times on ‘Love Is Blind’

While not being able to recall an odd date or service is entirely normal, pretending to forget a dynamic with a woman who you had to block or being unaware of the fundamental beliefs of your church is wildly unbelievable. When Sara asked Ben about the history and story behind the TikTok videos that allegedly point fingers at him for being a douchebag, he dodged the conversation by conveniently stating he doesn’t remember. However, after much poking and prodding he revealed that he had blocked the woman making the TikToks. If things got nasty to the point where he had to block someone, reasoning that he doesn’t remember is an excuse that’s hard to believe and makes Ben lose immense credibility in the eyes of viewers — and possibly Sara.

In more recent episodes of Love Is Blind, Sara asked Ben about his church’s views on the LGBTQ+ community, and he was dumbfounded. Sara listened to a service and cross-questioned Ben about what was being preached and whether he was okay with his church’s views. Ben dodged the conversation yet again by stating that he doesn’t really remember his church’s beliefs but is sure they aren’t extremists and are accepting of diversity. Considering that Ben said his faith and church are incredibly important to him, the fact he’s unaware or doesn’t “remember” where his church stands on specific issues seems like a convenient excuse to mask his ignorance.

Ben Seems to Have a Problem Conversing About Heavy Topics

There’s been a pattern throughout the course of Sara and Ben’s relationship where the former brings up topics like politics, religion, and sexuality, and the latter stares back at her blankly with not much to add to the conversation. From the onset of their relationship, Ben’s lack of opinion on the Black Lives Matter movement and also the fact that he doesn’t vote are an embodiment of how he’d rather view the world with rose-tinted glasses.

Considering the fact that George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis, Ben feigning ignorance over problematic incidents of prevalent racism in his city is a huge red flag. Moreover, he seems to ignore and brush over contributing to conversations each time Sara brings up hard-hitting topics. Ben seems incapable of engaging in intelligent and objective discussions, typecasting himself as the stereotypical jock who doesn’t care for anything beyond sports and women.

Ben Needs To Work on His Outlook on Life and Communication Style

Ben has stated that he’s socially liberal and fiscally conservative. However, he doesn’t seem to understand the weight of those words and what they actually represent. He constantly hits Sara with empty non-answers that don’t really consist of a point of view or opinion, to the extent that it becomes pretty evident that Ben simply doesn’t care. He exists in a privileged realm where he never finds himself in a scenario that forces him to think about the world beyond his family and social circles.

Feigning ignorance of current affairs and dodging meaningful discussions lead viewers to conclude that Ben is an avoidant. While Sara did defend Ben in a recent interview, stating that she believed at the time that Ben could change and evolve, it’s painfully evident that he has a lot of growing up to do and isn’t ready for a major commitment like marriage.
