The Connecticut Sun secured their spot in the WNBA playoffs weeks ago … but which team will they face?

There are two frontrunners and both teams have a big headliner.

There is a 56.8 percent probability that Connecticut will play against the Indiana Fever, led by rookie phenom Caitlin Clark. There is a 36.7 percent chance the Sun will see the Phoenix Mercury, led by UConn women’s basketball great Diana Taurasi.

Connecticut is 3-1 against Indiana, hosting the Fever for Clark’s WNBA regular season debut. Clark leads the league in assists per game (8.5) and in total assists this season (306). The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft also recorded the most assists in a single game (19), breaking the WNBA record.

The WNBA All-Star is well on her way to break the single-season assists record which is held by Olympic gold medalist and Sun power forward Alyssa Thomas. The WNBA career leader in triple-doubles (14) recorded 316 assists last season, so Clark needs 10 more assists to tie the record and 11 more to break it.

Many fans lined up for hours to watch Clark compete in the Mohegan Sun Arena, so there’s no doubt she will continue to draw a crowd.

And how poetic would it be for Clark’s first playoffs appearance to be against the same team she faced in her WNBA regular season debut?

Then there’s the chance that Connecticut will face Phoenix in what might be Taurasi’s farewell tour. After winning her sixth Olympic gold medal in Paris, the Mercury have been teasing the possibility of Taurasi retiring.

If this is it, Taurasi will go down as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. After leading the Huskies to three consecutive NCAA Titles, Taurasi was drafted by Phoenix with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft. She has stayed with the Mercury her entire career, leading the franchise to three WNBA Championships and earning WNBA Finals MVP twice (2009, ’14).

The 2009 WNBA MVP went onto become an 11-time WNBA All-Star, five time WNBA Scoring Champion, and the WNBA assists leader in 2014. Taurasi is the all-time scoring leader with 10,592 points and leads the league in most field-goals made (3,322) and three-pointers made (1,438) as of today.

While the Sun is 3-0 against the Mercury, the two teams will play against each other once more before the regular season ends.

The Sun are fighting against the Minnesota Lynx, led by former UConn women’s basketball player Napheesa Collier, for the No. 2 seed in the East. Connecticut is 26-10 and Minnesota is 27-9. Both teams have four games left to secure their seed and will face one other in a must-win game before the season ends.

The Sun will face Taurasi and the Mercury next on Friday at 10 p.m.
