9-1-1 Season 8’s Stealthy Lone Star Cameo Confirmed & Explained By Creator
9-1-1 Season 8’s Stealthy Lone Star Cameo Confirmed & Explained By Creator
9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear has confirmed a stealthy 9-1-1: Lone Star cameo in season 8 of the main series, explaining the process behind the surprise appearance. During 9-1-1 season 8, episode 2, Athena (Angela Bassett) has a flashback involving the day of her fiancé Emmett’s (Jeff Pierre) funeral, which included a dispatcher performing one last call during the mournful event. The voice of said dispatcher belonged to none other than Gina Torres, who portrays Captain Timmy Vega in 9-1-1: Lone Star. The cameo more readily connects both series to one another late into their runs.
Speaking with TVLine, Minear revealed he wanted Torres to voice the funeral dispatcher in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 2 because of her talent with voiceover work. Mentioning her voice work at Disney World’s Mission: SPACE at EPCOT, the creator said that, while it wasn’t always planned for her voice to be the one they utilized, it was ultimately decided she was the best fit for the emotional moment. Check out what Minear had to say below:
I called Gina [Torres] and just said, ‘Hey, can you do a little voiceover for me?’ I needed a great voice, and she’s got the best voice. She’s even the voice on a ride at Disney World, if I’m not mistaken — and I’m not…. I’m always looking for reasons to employ Gina Torres.”
What Gina Torres’ Cameo Means for 9-1-1 & Lone Star
A Subtle Nod Toward The Procedural Spinoff
While it’s unclear if the canon dictates Tommy was really the one who spoke at Emmett’s funeral, it would help lace both series’ more closely together as the spinoff comes to an end.
Torres’ cameo makes sense given her working relationship with Minear, who also co-wrote the episode with Ted Griffin. The actor and series co-creator first worked together on Firefly, where she portrayed Zoe Washburne, with the pair later reuniting during her small role as Jasmine in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel. She has been a major character in 9-1-1: Lone Star since season 2, but also has plenty of voiceover experience, including Airachnid in Transformers Prime and Vixen in Justice League Unlimited. These factors made her perfect for the voice during Athena’s flashbacks.
Given her role in the spinoff already, this cameo acts as a neat nod to the series, especially potent because 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 will be its final season. This is also just the first reference to the spinoff this season, with 9-1-1 season 8, episode 5 offering a brief nod to Firehouse 126. While it’s unclear if the canon dictates Tommy was really the one who spoke at Emmett’s funeral, it would help lace both series’ more closely together as the spinoff comes to an end.
Our Take On Gina Torres’ 9-1-1 Voice Cameo
A Mindful Nod To Her Departing Series
Torres’ cameo is not only a nod to her role in 9-1-1: Lone Star, but also holds some additional emotional resonance because the spinoff is set to end soon. Season 5 is set to end on December 16, 2024, effectively closing out the show, and ending its character storylines for good. While that doesn’t mean 9-1-1 won’t see some surprise cameos in the future, especially now that Torres’ appearance has opened the door, these will likely be small cameos like hers. However, it’s still a mindful nod to the concluding partner series.
