‘Big Brother 27’ recap: The Mastermind’s shocking White Locust elimination changes the game forever
Heading into Week 9 of Big Brother 27, Mickey Lee had just been evicted by a 6-1 vote over Ashley Hollis. That decision left just nine people in the house, but one of them was about to be eliminated due to a shocking White Locust twist brought about by the nefarious Mastermind. So, how did it all play out on Tuesday night?

We begin where Thursday’s episode left off, with Mickey leaving the house and having a one-on-one with Julie Chen Moonves. At the end of that hour, Julie was interrupted by the Mastermind, who teased, “The houseguests will soon receive an invitation to the mysterious White Locust Resort. One of them won’t be checking out.” Due to the MTV VMAs, there was no Sunday episode of Big Brother, so fans have been waiting on pins and needles to see the White Locust twist in action. Let’s go!
The Judges Take a Vacation
The vote to protect Ashley over Mickey last week was a significant step in the right direction for the Judges alliance, showing that they could all work on the same page to save one of their own. As happy as the five of them were in their own success, Keanu and Kelley were equally proud that they had knocked off one of Rachel’s pawns in Mickey.
Before the Judges could settle in to their new rule over the house, Keanu brought news of the White Locust twist that invited them on vacation to a mysterious and very unexpected “Mastermind Month of Mayhem.” When the houseguests arrived at the fated resort in the backyard, the Mastermind warned them that “in a matter of hours” one of them would be the first jury member after all of them are forced to compete in a comp that will test their challenge skills.
Tyler Saves/Ruins the Day
To soften the blow of the twist, the Mastermind brought in alum Tyler Crispen in to host the dreaded comp promising to send one of the houseguests home. First, in order to “earn safety for the night” and to make a “monumental decision,” everyone had to individually race to slide three totems along three different tables into a landing strip in “Survive the White Locust.” In the first wave of attempts, Lauren scored a 51.75 second time that Morgan, Kelley and Vince all failed to beat. Keanu bested Lauren with a time of 44.12 seconds, but was immediately unseated by Ava’s time of 39.12 seconds. Rachel, Will and Lauren all failed to beat Ava’s winning time.
With her win, Ava earned safety for the night, but was required to choose one houseguest to fight for their life on the “Mastermind’s Maniacal Maze.” The first houseguest chosen would have 6.5 minutes to complete the maze. If successful, they’d get to decide the next houseguest to complete, but with one less minute than the player before them. The first player in the chain of events to not succeed on the maze would become the sacrifice to the Mastermind and be eliminated from the house entirely. If those stakes weren’t high enough, Tyler raised them by noting that the player who completes the maze in the fastest time would become the next Head of Household.
The Maze!!!
As soon as the houseguests got back in the house for Ava to make a decision within minutes, Rachel ushered her into a room privately in order to try strategizing while Keanu followed asking to go first. Rachel wanted to go first so that she could complete the maze and also ensure that the Judges have control over the game and to ensure that Keanu goes last. Ava’s instinct was to have Morgan go first so that no one would be upset, but Rachel didn’t understand why picking her would upset anyone. Both Ava and Ashley pointed out that Rachel dragged Ava away from the others trying to force Ava’s decision. Ultimately, Ava decided to ask for volunteers publicly and got raised hands from Keanu, Rachel and Lauren. Sticking to her plan to not pick Keanu or Rachel, Ava latched on to a very meekly raised hand from Vince and chose him to go first.
While Rachel and Keanu argued in the storage room, Vince finished the maze and returned to make his choice about who to send out next. He wanted to send Lauren into the comp next, but only with confirmation from her that she’d choose Morgan after her. When Vince communicated that plan to Morgan and Rachel, both of them were upset at the “hurtful” decision that he’d prioritize Lauren over them. Keanu also wanted to go next and promised to choose Lauren after him, but ultimately Vince sent Lauren out before ever getting verbal confirmation from her that she’d pick Morgan and not Kelley to follow her.
Lauren also completed the maze while Morgan was agitated toward a near-panic attack inside the house with Vince unsuccessfully trying to calm her down. Wanting to protect Kelley and unable to get a name from Morgan about who she’d pick next, Lauren was hesitant to follow Vince’s advice and put Morgan on the maze, but ultimately did.
Morgan also saved herself with enough time left on the clock to confidently send Rachel to the maze next with only 3.5 minutes available on the clock. As sure as Morgan was that Rachel was strong enough to complete the maze in time, Rachel struggled moving the wheel around with enough coordination to beat the clock. From the sidelines, even Tyler was in shock that Rachel became the sacrifice to the Mastermind. When the houseguests heard of Rachel’s elimination from the Mastermind over the speaker, shock and awe spread through the house like wildfire.
Rachel’s Goodbye
In her final words, Rachel cried to Tyler that she “tried so hard. None of these newbies ever listened to me.” And later in the Diary Room she expressed sadness: “I don’t win the competition and I’m out of the game. I’m really disappointed in myself. Big Brother has meant so much to me. I met my husband on the show, I have two beautiful kids because of it. I’m a winner of the game. I’m a legend. Kinda felt like I let everyone down.”
Before leaving the house, she gave one last pep talk to the “newbies” about what to expect from her on the jury: “Don’t think I’m gonna make your jury round table easy coz that’s what you want. You’re gonna have to work to win this game. You’re gonna have to fight and get blood on your hands. Coz that’s what I did. And I’ve done it three times now. So don’t think that you can show up in those final two chairs and I’m gonna let you guys get off easy. Coz if you wanna be a legend like me, then you have to work for it and earn it.”
“Good job, newbies. Clap because the legend and the queen is leaving!”
