Where Is May Grant on 9-1-1?

Television shows eventually lose characters; that’s just a fact. Fortunately for fans of 9-1-1, it seems the beloved members of Los Angeles’ Station 118 are (mostly) sticking together. Thus far, only one major character has exited. The show’s many regulars, however, are not as static. Take, for instance, May Grant (Corinne Massiah), who has been conspicuously absent for most of the past three seasons.

Her prolonged disappearance has not escaped notice. At first, it was hand-waved as a narrative necessity. Despite starring in some prominent storylines, her character faded into the background. However, as more episodes debuted without her, fans grew concerned. Her eventual (and brief) return coincided with the perplexing wholesale recast of her brother, Harry (Marcanthonee Jon Reis and Elijah M. Cooper).

  • May’s brother, Harry, was originally played by Marcanthonee Jon Reis. However, after five seasons on the show, Reis declined the studio’s offer to return. Thus, the 9-1-1 crew was forced to cast Goosebumps’ Elijah M. Cooper in his stead.

As her name implies, May is the daughter of 9-1-1’s Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) and her first husband, Michael (Rockmond Dunbar). As the eldest of the Grant children, she’s enjoyed plenty of screentime. In her initial appearances, she portrayed a rebellious teenager. In the show’s third episode, “Next of Kin”, ongoing bullying drove her to attempt suicide. However, her story did not end there. Her actress’s growth has paralleled the character’s journey. May has matured throughout the series.

By Season 3, she’s celebrating her high school graduation and planning for college. During a gap year, she joins the call center as a 911 operator. The job serves more than May’s wallet. In addition to giving her some spending money, the position helps her mature. Narratively, it also provided actress Jeniffer Love Hewitt a convenient “cover” for her pregnancy leave. However, following Hewitt’s return as Maddie Han, May seemingly disappeared overnight.

Corinne Massiah Plays May Grant on 9-1-1

And much like Jennifer Love Hewitt’s extended leave between the show’s fourth and fifth seasons, Corinne Massiah’s departure mirrors real life. May Grant’s actress, was studying to get her (real) degree and graduated from UCLA in June 2025. So, once again, television mirrors reality. As for the character of May Grant, fans must wait and see.

Considering Bobby’s recent (and controversial) death, she’s unlikely to leave soon. Her reappearance in Season 8’s final handful of episodes only strengthens the case for her return. Without any official evidence, it’s hard to say whether or not May Grant will return as a regular. Further evidence of her probable return can be tentatively gleaned from her Instagram account, where her fellow 9-1-1 co-stars regularly pop in to like and comment on her updates.
