Who is Sophia Smith? Liam Payne’s childhood pal turned girlfriend who One Direction star broke up with
SOPHIA Smith found herself launched into the spotlight in 2013 when she started dating Liam Payne.
She was in a relationship with the late singer – who passed away aged 31 – during his One Direction days.
Born on February 9, 1994, Sophia Smith is a fashion influencer and designer.
After graduating from Birmingham City University in 2016, she set about creating her own business.
She has since launched her fashion line, SOPHIAXSMITH in collaboration with Our Social Collective.
Sophia is also a popular Instagram influencer and boasts over 800K followers.
During her time working in fashion, she has teamed up with top brands like Pretty Little Things and Victoria’s Secret.
Sophia is in a long-term relationship, but has not revealed the name of her partner.
The couple are parents to their daughter Angelina who was born in April 2023.
Meeting Liam Payne
Sophia met Liam Payne when they were teenagers at secondary school in their native Wolverhampton.
However, they didn’t start dating until 2013, following his split from Danielle Peazer.
In an 2015 interview with Attitude Magazine, Liam shared: “I didn’t actually go out with her [when we were in school]. I used to see her at school, and we’d kind of chat.
“I asked her sister for her number.
“She was very shy and didn’t give much indication that she liked me, so I just assumed that she wasn’t interested, as well as thinking she was way too hot for me anyway.”
Liam introduced Sophia as his girlfriend during the One Direction: This Is Us movie press conference.
The singer also revealed that the song Illusion from the band’s fourth album, Four, was written about his relationship with Sophia.
The break-up
The couple were together for two years before they broke-up.
They split in 2015, and soon after Liam started dating Cheryl Cole and they went onto have a son called Bear.
Shortly after he was born, Sophia revealed she had reached out to her ex-boyfriend to say she was “happy” for him and the Girls Aloud star.
Speaking exclusively told the Sun: “’I messaged to congratulate him.
“We’re all good. I’m happy for him.”
