Is Ryan Guzman Leaving ‘9-1-1’? What He Said About Eddie Diaz in Season 8
9-1-1 is back on the air with new episodes, and fans are seriously upset about where one character is going this season.
Season 8 of the hit ABC show is premiering its latter set of episodes, and viewers got to see a fan-favorite first responder embark on a surprise turn of events. After much debate about whether Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) would join his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh) down in Texas, the firefighter made the difficult decision to leave his loved ones at the 118 in Los Angeles to spend more time with his son. As fans watched him pack up his things and load them into a U-Haul truck, he and his best friend Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) have a tender moment about how this move will affect their bond as they each start new chapters in their lives.
“Thanks for helping me get back to [Christopher],” Eddie tells Buck in a clip posted on YouTube. “I know this whole thing between us has been messy and hard and both of us could’ve handled it a little bit better. But I hope you know … you do matter to me. Chris and I are always a phone call or FaceTime away.”
After seeing Eddie leave L.A. for a new adventure down south, folks were heartbroken, and left wondering: Is Ryan Guzman leaving 9-1-1? Luckily, Ryan gave his thoughts on Eddie’s future — and fans will want to pay attention to this.
When speaking to The Wrap about Eddie’s new arc, Ryan shared he’s not leaving 9-1-1 any time soon. And while Eddie’s presence will still be felt (especially when it comes to his friendship with Buck), it’s up to the showrunners and writers to determine when we’ll see the character (and subsequently, Ryan) onscreen again.
“We will be in Texas for a bit,” he stated in March 2025. “The end goal is to get Eddie back to the 118, but we’ll see what happens … They’re best friends, like my best friends I talk to every single day, if not every other day. But they stay in touch all the time. You’re going to be seeing a lot of Buck and Eddie being each other’s sounding board.”
If that’s not enough, Ryan also noted that there will be some challenges brewing in regards to bringing Christopher with Eddie back to L.A. “As much as he would love to go back to the 118 and his life there, he is dealing with this new reality,” he added. “Getting his son to pull up his roots again and replant him back in L.A. is going to be the hardest thing in the world.”
