9-1-1: Lone Star Update Means It Can No Longer Fix Its Season 5 Blunder

9-1-1: Lone Star Update Means It Can No Longer Fix Its Season 5 Blunder

As Fox airs the last season of 9-1-1: Lone Star, the show has issues to address to wrap up its story, but the series cannot fix one of its biggest mistakes before the finale. The procedural drama is a spinoff of the hit show 9-1-1, which moved from Fox to ABC in 2024 and is in the midst of airing its eighth season. While 9-1-1 has excelled following its transition, 9-1-1: Lone Star is ending after season 5. Some hope that the characters will live on in other 9-1-1 shows, but for now, their stories will end during the season 5 finale.

The fall finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star , “Fall From Grace,” season 5 airs on December 2 at 8 pm ET on Fox, and will return on January 20, 2025, at the same time. Meanwhile, the series finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star is scheduled for February 3.

Among the various storylines in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 are Carlos investigating his father’s murder, Judd’s retirement (and subsequential return to Station 126), Tommy’s cancer diagnosis, TK and Carlos’ marital problems, Wyatt replacing Grace as the show’s 9-1-1 operator, and more. So, it’s safe to say that the show’s final season has a lot going on. However, 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5’s most disappointing plot can’t be resolved by the time the series ends.

Grace Will Not Return To 9-1-1: Lone Star Finale

Sierra McClain Exited The Show Ahead Of Season 5

Sierra McClain exited 9-1-1: Lone Star before season 5, meaning the premiere had to explain her character’s absence. The good news is that the writers didn’t kill off Grace; the bad news is that the reason behind her exit didn’t make sense. In episode 1, Grace left Texas to volunteer for Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships is an organization that operates non-governmental hospital ships overseas, providing life-saving care and surgery. Consequently, Grace is abroad while Judd and their daughter, Charlie, have been left to their own devices, and she won’t return to end this story properly.

According to TVLineco-showrunner Rashad Raisani confirmed that McClain won’t reprise her role as Grace before 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s finale. Raisani added, “Not for lack of effort.” It sounds as if the writers tried to get McClain back for the series finale, but it just didn’t work out.

Why Grace’s 9-1-1: Lone Star Exit Is So Controversial

The Reasoning Behind Grace’s Absence Is Uncharacteristic For Her

It doesn’t make sense for Grace to spontaneously leave her family, no matter the cause, especially during hard times. As a result, it’s understandable why Grace’s 9-1-1: Lone Star exit is so disappointing. Of course, it’s much better than the alternative of Grace dying or her and Judd getting a divorce, but that doesn’t make the actual reason behind her absence any less upsetting. While it’s easy to believe that Grace would want to help others, it’s out of character for her to leave her family behind in the process in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5.
