9-1-1: Lone Star is heading towards the series finale in February, but is the show killing off a major beloved character? Based on the promo for the upcoming Season 5 episode, it looks like Carlos Reyes (Rafael Silva) is in a dangerous situation and it has some fans understandably concerned.
Does Carlos Die in 9-1-1: Lone Star?
The 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, Episode 9 promo reveals that a lot is going to happen in the fall finale and, likely, it’s going to end on a cliffhanger. The promo teases that the episode will be “riveting” and “you won’t believe the shocking twist.”
In part of the promo, Carlos is told to “take the shot… that’s an order, ranger” from atop a rocky perch. Then he’s shown getting shot and falling down the rocks.
In Episode 8, Carlos got a step closer to solving his father’s murder case, with an informant his dad had been in contact with telling him that he shouldn’t trust Ranger Campbell (Parker Young) — who happens to be Carlos’ new partner.
In a November 18 interview with Entertainment Weekly, 9-1-1: Lone Star co-showrunner Rashad Raisani seemingly confirmed that Carlos won’t die. He gave some insight about what to expect in the fall finale and it sounds like Carlos will get closure and move onto his next chapter.
“All truth is laid bare for Carlos,” Raisani said. “In some ways it’s the end of Carlos’ mission. Well, it’s the end of his quest but the beginning of his life’s mission, meaning he will get to the bottom of who killed his father and it will be painful and exhilarating and peace-giving, but it only opens his eyes to a deeper possibility of who Carlos can be now that he’s solved that murder.”
In a September 30 interview with TV Insider, Gina Torres, who plays Tommy, also confirmed that everyone is going to survive into the finale. “We all make it to the end of the season, so let me just put everybody at ease right away,” she said.
Torres couldn’t reveal anything specific about the series finale, but did note, “It ends as it should. You’ll see us united and you’ll see all those people and all those relationships that everybody out there has invested in for all of these seasons.”
In a November interview with TV Insider for their 9-1-1: Lone Star aftershow, First Response, Young shed some light on his character, noting that he “didn’t know the trajectory” of Campbell when he first joined the show. “Is he a bad guy, is he a good guy? Did he do it, did he not do it?” Young said, noting that he has just been “trusting the process.”
Young couldn’t reveal where the story will go, but made his case for why Carlos might not want to trust the informant. “I’m his partner. I’ve proven to him that I’m a solid dude,” he said. “I make good recommendations when it comes to how he might handle situations with his husband and when it comes to anniversary gifts and things like that. So yeah, I think that I’ve proven myself to be a trustworthy gentleman, and I think that you should take my side, give me the benefit of the doubt over some dying criminal.”
“Our job as Rangers is to take the information that we’re given and to just follow the investigation, follow the clues where they lead, and that’s a massive bomb that’s dropped into Carlos’ lap,” Young said. “I have to believe that if I was in the same position, I would do the same thing because if he were to tell that to me, well, he just showed me his hand, and if I am, in fact, as bad as this dude is saying, then Carlos has to be very, very careful because quite frankly, his life could be on the line.”
Fans definitely aren’t convinced that Campbell is Carlos’ father’s killer. In a Reddit discussion about the promo for the upcoming episode, one person noted, “I’m calling it. Ranger Campbell is the key to his dad’s case. In which the captain is the bad guy.”
Another fan agreed, noting, “Definitely not Campbell. Just from the way Carlos was shot, the angle is off for Campbell being the one shooting him. I think it’s the captain but they’ll lead us to believe it’s Campbell the whole episode.”
One person pointed out that the chief seemed “suspicious” in the Season 5 premiere, noting, he “seems to constantly discourage and/or divert Carlos’ attempts to find his father’s killer. This episode cemented that for me.”
